From Meridian Essence to TCM Aromatherapy
An Upgrade of Meridian Essence with the Use of Chinese Herbal Essential Oils
Meridian essence is about the use essential oils as a tool for the practice of the meridian theory of traditional Chinese medicine. Through the means of acupressure and meridian massage, including "milking" and "anchoring," essential oils get to enter deep into the body, into the tissues, the organs, the liquids and the cells in the body, and into one's feeling and soul.

Recently, many students asked about tumors, cancers and the use of essential oils. Now "cancer" has become a dreaded term. People is afraid to hear that they or their relatives have been diagnosed with cancer. Rumor has it that "improper use of essential oils will lead cancer cells to spread" for "essential oils participate in the promotion of microcirculation of human body." How can this be explained? I will offer an answer in this article from the perspective of Meridian Essence.
We all know that cancer is also known as malignant tumor. It is the abnormal proliferation of cells, and these proliferating cells may invade other parts of the body. The most frightening thing about cancer is that it often does not have any symptoms at the beginning. When you are aware of it and begin to treat it, you find the speed of treatment can hardly keep up with that of its mutation. That is why the fatality of cancer has always been high. Since there is no absolute treatment for defeating cancer, various natural therapies provide their unique ways, such as health diet, aromatherapy, qigong, and exercises. There has been a lot of rumors among people. For instance, "a relative of mine and a friend of my friend have been suffering from some kind of cancer. They all eat some kind of essential oil and all become cured." However, according to my research, most of these rumors are just marketing tactics promoting something as a product with therapeutic effects, for it is difficult for one to verify whether this person who suffers from cancer and is later cured has taken in other oral drugs, chemotherapy or radiotherapy in addition to essential oils. Since the number of experimental samples regarding the use of essential oils in cancer patients is not enough, I will not make any comment here. In Western medicine, cancer is defined as abnormal cell proliferation. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is a kind of phlegm, stasis, lump, accumulation or scrofula in the human body whose location can be regularly followed. The pathogenic qi prevails where the vital qi is weak. Coupled with the stagnation or blood stasis caused by negative emotions, the qi and blood of the human body may get bogged down there. After a long time. they become a kind of lump or accumulation. The purpose of meridian massage with the use of essential oils is to dredge this kind of qi stagnation and blood stasis. The flow of qi promotes the flow of blood. By reinforcing yang and the flow of qi, the microcirculation of blood and lymph in the skin and muscle layer is also reinforced. This may speed up the circulation of various organs and the metabolism of toxins in the body. Although the metabolism of toxins in the body does not directly interact with cancer cells, the principle of driving out the pathogenic qi in the body is the same. Suppose that "the promotion of microcirculation of human body will lead to the metastasis of cancer cells is correct," is it possible that we say people with cancer should not exercise and should not do anything that might promote the blood and lymph circulation of the body? Can you tell them to just sit back and wait die? The answer is definitely negative. My opinion is just the opposite. Any means that can promote microcirculation are good for cancer patients. My discussion regarding whether the use of essential oils in promoting the microcirculation of the body will lead to the metastasis of cancer cells ends here. As The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine says, " When there is sufficient vital qi inside, pathogenic factors have no way to invade the body." Supplement your body with enough vital qi, then, the pathogenic qi will naturally be driven out. Dr. Li Chun Lian is the first expert in aromatherapy who is also a traditional Chinese medical doctor in Taiwan. She is also the founder of CAREIN Aromatherapy Institute. Following the publication of Be Your Own Aromatherapist, a book that provides a comprehensive introduction to aromatherapy and the use of essential oils, Dr. Li Chun Lian published her next book, A Comprehensive Application Book for Aromatherapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine, based on her qualifications as a senior aromatherapist and traditional Chinese medical doctor. The book further integrates the two major systems of "Chinese Medicine" and "Aromatherapy" into a comprehensive application book of essential oils that goes from the easy and the basic to the difficult and more complicated in a systematic, theoretical, practical and cordial way.
In addition to years of clinical experience in Western medicine and medical care, Dr. Li Chun Lian also obtained doctoral degree in internal medicine from TCM in the famous Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine in the Mainland China and become the first expert in aromatherapy who is also a traditional Chinese medical doctor in Taiwan. Dr. Li Chun Lian's professional background with her research on the efficacy of essential oils for more than 20 years, including various precious natural plants, make her Shennong in the field of essential oils. Dr. Li Chun Lian emphasized that aromatherapy is the use of plant essential oils, whether through breathing or massage, to regulate the state of body and mind. When aromatherapy integrates the philosophy of traditional Chinese medicine, the use of essential oils can be more in-depth. For instance, how should we use essential oils for people of different TCM constitutions? Or, should I choose an essential oil formula that nourishes yin or warms yang? How should the choice of essential oils differ from the perspective of male health and female health? How to prescribe a regimen that fits one's TCM constitutions after assessing one's physical and mental symptoms as well as seasonal and environmental factors? A medical research shows that aromatherapy of traditional Chinese medicine is extremely effective for stress relief and pain relief after surgery. Aromatherapy combined with traditional Chinese medicine has sufficient professional characteristics and attractiveness to engage in international medical activities. However, various supporting measures must be considered. It is recommended that specialized international medical institutions or medical centers implement the promotion of aromatherapy in traditional Chinese medicine, provide complete training for traditional Chinese medicine practitioners and nursing staff, be equipped with appropriate hardware and software, and establish good operating strategies. The international promotion of the integration of traditional Chinese medicine and aromatherapy will become an important characteristics of Taiwan's international medical services. Both traditional Chinese herbology and Western study in medicinal herbs use the power of nature to enhance the body's self-healing power. Therefore, by making use of the concept of "having one's body do the right thing at the right time" and combining it with methods of regimen in aromatherapy, whether by massage or smelling, we get to adjust the body and mind and achieve the goal of balancing the body and the mind. Dr. Li Chun Lian, the leader of CAREIN Co. Ltd., is the first expert in Taiwan to combine traditional Chinese medicine with aromatherapy and essential oil. She founded the brand "CAREIN Aromatherapy Institute" and developed the Traditional Chinese Herbal Essential Body Oil Series. Dr. Li Chun Lian extracted essential oils from various traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, combined them according to the traditional Chinese medical philosophy, developed the patented Traditional Chinese Herbal Essential Body Oil Series and became a rookie on the awarding venue of the the Chinese Taipei Biotechnology Service and Business Trade Association this year.
Dr. Li Chun Lian says, "this essence of the wisdom of Chinese ancestors' is in fact related to the regimen of essential oils. Traditional Chinese medical treatments use herbal plants for healing or health care. Essential oils are extracted from herbs and plants. With the help of modern biotechnology and latest scientific methods, we get to preserve the active constituent for health care more completely and effectively." Therefore, in addition to the research of essential oils, Dr. Li Chun Lian also gets a doctoral degree in traditional Chinese medicine. By combining traditional Chinese medicine with essential oils and aromatherapy, Dr. Li Chun Lian creates an original health care production industry. The "2020 Asia-Pacific BIO Health Biotechnology Award" held by the Chinese Taipei Biotechnology Service and Business Trade Association is to consolidate the power of the biotechnology industry and discover more products that are better. The director of the Chinese Taipei Biotechnology Service and Business Trade Association , Wang Shine Tsy, emphasized that the government attaches great importance to the promotion of Taiwan’s biotechnology industry to the world, and the 2020 Asia-Pacific BIO Health Biotechnology Award is to affirm these excellent brands and companies. By doing so, we look forward to bring these high-quality manufacturers to the international stage and increase Taiwan’s visibility. At the same time, in response to the global trend of aging population, the market's demand for health food and health care has gradually increased in recent years. The impact of COVID-19 has people pay more attention to the so-called "health industry". The Chinese Taipei Biotechnology Service and Business Trade Association is the biggest promoter and assistant behind the industry. With the association's continuous efforts for 16 years, it has become an important platform for the communication and cooperation between the industry, relevant government units and international exhibitions. When it comes to "essential oils", a theme that I have been talking about all my life, I always try to use various specific examples to demonstrate their effects. Yet, there has always been gray area of some sort, that is, how should the effects of essential oils be positioned? Is it really difficult to tell whether an essential oil is pure or not?
This is also a question that I am most often asked. In fact, the authenticity of an essential oil is not difficult to discern. My answer would be, "as long as you smelt the authentic ones, you should be able to tell the ones that are fake." This answer may sound a bit tyrannical, but it is also very true. Those who have experienced it will also nod from the heart. A sad thing for modern people is that our sensory enjoyment merely includes all the five senses of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. We appreciate things with almost only two senses left, which are sight and hearing. We may appreciate beautiful things with our eyes. We may appreciate beautiful music with our ears. But few people would regard smelling a particular kind of aroma as an entertainment. Wenxiang (smelling fragrance) should be an entertaining activity that may contribute to one's peace of mind. Yet, this enjoyment of olfaction is declining, why? After the industrial revolution in the 19th century, the synthesis of fragrance and its use in industrial application have become common. People no longer has to fight for spices or plant for the extraction of fragrance. People just need to make it in the laboratory. It guarantees that there will be no pesticides and no chemical fertilizer. It guarantees that the fragrance synthesized will be 100% pure. However, it also guarantees that fragrance will only be "fragrance, " nothing more than a dead inorganic substance that has no healing effects and will not even interact with the human cells. Therefore, after the science and technology has been prosperous, "fragrance" has long been used as an indoor fragrance, a deodorant substance, or a sentimental product. I refuse to reconcile with what I have found and seek to find other evidences regarding the possibility that fragrance could be healing. In literature review, I found plenty of them. The word "aromatherapy" is actually quite young. It was first coined by a French chemist, Rene Maurice Gattefosse in 1920. Once, he accidentally burned his hand in his father's perfume factory. Out of emergency, he immediately placed the injured hand in pure lavender essential oil. Afterwards, there was no trace of the part being injured. In addition to the miraculous wound healing ability, it is also found that lavender essential oils have also shortened the recovery time. This prompted him to study the effects of lavender essential oil. In 1928, he published his research results in scientific journals and used the term "Aromatherapie" for the first time. In 1937, Rene published another medical book devoted to the effectiveness of essential oils against bacteria. Since then, "aromatherapy" has become a thread of a holistic healing treatment that uses natural plant extracts to promote health and well-being. It is until Jean Vainet, a French doctor, in 1964, that essential oils have been used for medical purposes. For instance, by means of olfactory stimulation and skin absorption, essential oils may be transmitted to the central nervous system of the brain for the purpose of soothing the nervous system, respiratory system, circulatory system, endocrine system and digestive system. Its scent is also effective in producing psychological effects. For instance, one may get to transform emotions, enhance attention, relieve stress, relax muscles and improve sleep patterns with the help of beautiful scents. Regarding the application of these aroma plants, more evidences can be found in the history, both Chinese and Western. Some even plays a role in the rise and fall of great powers. When the time is pushed back to the 15th century, we will find the great sea power dispute between Portugal and Spain are actually a fight for rare spices in the name of sea power expansion for finding a new continent. Zheng He's expeditions to the "Western" during the period of Yongle Emperor is another example is also said to be for the black pepper and other South Asian spices in the area around the India and Sri Lanka today. Earlier records regarding the use of fragrance can be found in The Songs of Chu written by Qu Yuan, which is about the burning of incense sticks or the wearing of aromatic sachet, both in the court and in the folk in the Spring and Autumn (770-476 BC) and Warring States (475-221) periods. The history of using fragrance can be said to be across the East and the West, across the ancient and the modern. Everyone loves fragrance. Yet, when fragrance has become a product and is commercially promoted in all ways, plant essential oils that are naive and "nature" has become farther away from us. Meridian Essence: Theory of Essential Oils and Meridian is not just about what is essential oil and what is not or what kind of essential oil is authentic. It is also about the use essential oils as a tool for the practice of the meridian theory of traditional Chinese medicine. Meridian essence will lead you to another chapter of aromatherapy that is combined with the meridian theory of traditional Chinese medicine. Through the means of acupressure and meridian massage, essential oils get to enter deep into your body, to every part of your tissues, organs, liquids, cells, feelings and souls. The regimen of meridian essence is not just about the care of the body but also for the care of the heart as whole. This is fundamental in all nature therapies, both Chinese and Western. |
